Making and Technical Writing with the Missouri Writing Projects Network

In the run up to the MacArthur Foundation’s Digital Media and Learning Conference in San Francisco, making is on my mind. The ways that we make to learn, learn to make, and the composing processes involved in it all. One of the strands of the conference is being organized by Mitch Resnick around ideas of Making, Tinkering and Remixing and the connections to 21st century learning.

In this light then I am reposting the most recent video from the Missouri State Networks Making and Technical Writing work. While much of this work is not in fact digital, what I see is that the approach to learning and habits of mind reflect much of what we see in the conversations about authentic and participatory learning and 21st century literacy. What do you see? And what are the implications?

The Making and Technical Writing Conference in 2011 was supported by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), the Missouri Writing Project Network (MWPN), and the National Writing Project’s Digital Is website supported by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. 

The statewide two-day professional development conference for K-12 educators focused on Making and Technical Writing and was held September 15-16, 2011.

Participants explored the connections between hands-on projects and technical writing. Teachers and administrators learned about Common Core Standards, technical and informational writing, integrated literacy through invention and hands-on projects, and digital writing. The conference was free for K-12 teachers statewide with a special emphasis on Career and Technical Center educators.
