Con amor...
“Hi maestra!”
“¿Cómo estás hoy?”, I ask as my student walks in the classroom door.
“Happy! Ayer fui a la casa de mi prima y jugamos videojuegos, like, ALL DAY!”
I smile as I hear my student code-switching between Spanish and English. Some may frown upon it, but this code-switching is actually an indicator of a high-functioning brain. It brings me absolute joy that my students are able to easily switch between languages and will have this skill all their lives if they continue to work at it.
It also brings me joy that my students are so kind to me when I make mistakes with their native language. It is “con amor” that they gently correct me. There is an ebb and flow with the language in our classroom but it is always “con amor”.
