At NWP’s 2020 NCTE Brunch workshop with Ebony Flowers, creator of Hot Comb and other comics, we were all taken down a path toward an inevitable conclusion: We actually all can make comics—none of that ‘I can’t draw’ stuff.

After the online workshop, a delightful Twitter thread proved the point. Images of all sorts and styles were posted, demonstrating that we each can begin to find a ‘style’ for our drawing, discovering our own ‘line.’

Comics are a forgiving format, welcoming of styles as diverse as high-art graphic novels or doodling stick figures. So for anyone who has been bitten by the drawing bug and wants to push towards some playful practice, this collection gathers some options. Both Believer and Lunch Doodles link to online inspiration/workshops. The remaining links take you to recommended books with exercises that will help you get out of your own way and tap into your creativity.

And needless to say, great activities for our students too.
