Jessyca Mathews

About

Jessyca was born in Flint, Michigan. She is a graduate of Flint Carman-Ainsworth High School and the University of Michigan-Flint with a degree in English, with a specialization in secondary education. She acquired her masters degree from Marygrove College in Detroit and has graduate credit from Michigan State University. She lives in Flint and teaches English at her high school Alma mater as well as serving as the school's varsity girls soccer coach. She also is a writer of two books, one being the 2013 Mana Award winner, Simply: A Collection of Poetry and the memoir, 318: A Chubby Chicks Tale of Weight Loss Surgery. In 2017 she began writing as a contributor to The Mighty Magazine, which is an advocacy writing for chronic illnesses and for Nia Magazine, which focuses on stories for African-American women.
