The Morehead Writing Project, a local site of the National Writing Project, will offer its third Online Summer Institute in June. Unlike our Invitational Summer Institute, the MWP Online Summer Institute is open to teachers throughout the country. However, just like our ISI, we welcome teachers at all levels, from primary through post-secondary, and in all disciplines and content areas. When I mention our Online Summer Institute, I invariably get two responses – cool, I’d love to do something like that OR ummm, how does that work…
Our Online Summer Institute covers the same essential concepts as our ISI:
• Teacher as Writer
• Teacher as Reflective Practitioner
• Teacher as Researcher
• Teacher as Leader
Much as we do in the ISI, in the Online Summer Institute we write together in a community (sharing and providing feedback and support). We learn about writing theory and pedagogy and discuss how these ideas and practices can play out in our individual classrooms. We also share model lessons and practices with each other to inspire our teaching. We conduct our own investigation into a specific question related to writing theory/practice. We take turns leading discussions and offering feedback to each other. It is a highly collaborative community effort and no one (including the instructor) leaves the experience the same as they began it.
While our Online Summer Institute is different than the more traditional model, as it is asynchronous and you are not required to spend the month of June on the campus of Morehead State University, it offers the same life-changing experience. Here are five reasons to sign up for the Morehead Writing Project Online Summer Institute.
