I was invited into the planning for this idea by friends and fellows in the Connected Courses community, and I could not resist. The idea that emerged from side discussions is to create a Daily Connect, a riff on the DS106 Daily Create, in which folks will be encouraged to make connections.

I am also the co-director of technology with the Western Massachusetts Writing Project (http://www.umass.edu/wmwp/) and a co-editor of the book collection Teaching the New Writing: Technology, Change and Assessment in the 21st Century Classroom ( http://store.tcpress.com/ 0807749648.shtml) that examines the role of technology in the writing classroom in the age of standardized testing and assessment. I had a good friend in an one of my very first bands (The Roadbowlers!), and when I would bring in original songs for the three of us to play, she would always be so appreciative and receptive, even if the song sucked and fell apart (more often, than not, it turns out). Susanna was just learning to play guitar but her philosophy around music making was informed by an artist she listened to a lot and admired as an artist making her way mostly independent of the record industry,
As has been my mode lately, I was watching the most recent video from the Connected Courses project in Vialogues (Thanks, Terry Elliott!) with Michael Wesch, Randy Bass and Cathy Davidson with my ear towards ideas that I might use in a comic. Of course, when you have smart people like that, interesting ideas float around like butterflies.
This comic is just an extension of thinking about how some universities require faculty to use a certain Learning Management System and how that requirement hems in both the teacher and the learners in many ways. When we talk about open learning systems in space like Connected Courses, this may a roadblock for many faculty.
Peter Kittle started up a crowdsourcing activity early on in the Making Learning Connected MOOC -- asking people to add tools and technology resources they were using as they were "making" projects this summer. I took that list and grouped things as best as I could, and share it here with you. A list like this can be useful to a limited degree -- in the end, what you compose and make comes from your own ideas, not the tools themselves. Still ....
