About

I teach sixth grade in Southampton, Massachusetts at the William E. Norris Elementary School, where my students use technology for publishing and creation throughout the year (http://epencil.edublogs.org/). I am also the co-director of technology with the Western Massachusetts Writing Project (http://www.umass.edu/wmwp/) and a co-editor of the book collection Teaching the New Writing: Technology, Change and Assessment in the 21st Century Classroom ( http://store.tcpress.com/ 0807749648.shtml) that examines the role of technology in the writing classroom in the age of standardized testing and assessment. I also dabble in the world of classroom-based humor through my Boolean Squared webcomic (www.booleansquared.com) and other assorted places. I also spent a fair amount of time on Twitter (https://twitter.com/dogtrax)

Change the system

I've been up and down with systems thinking all this week in the Making Learning Connected MOOC. What I mean by that is that I've had days where I have been playing with a systems thinking approach and other days where thinking about systematic inequities has me struggling with how to address problems that seem larger than me.

This was first shared at my blog -- Kevin's Meandering Mind -- as part of the Making Learning Connected MOOC.

Peace Poster Collage

I hate to kill the playful mojo of the CLMOOC, which has been streaming in channels in social media spaces around the #untro -- or "unintroducing yourself" by mashing up media and glitching images and smashing ideas. But in the midst of all this play, I can't help but think about the headlines and events of the past week, and how identity in the form of flags and race are right now part of the national conversation.

Let's connect

I made a ton of comics for the most recent round of Rhizomatic Learning with Dave Cormier, as well as other assorted media, such as memes and graphs and artwork. I realized, as Rhizo15 now officially winds down (but really, it never ends, if we can help it ... thus, the Let's Connect image above), that I have 56 items in my Flickr Album for Rhizo15.

56 items?

How'd that happen? (Wait -- now 57, as I added a screenshot of the group into the album itself)
